Musician Reparist: Sikh Instrument Repair Training Programme

About the Role

 Sangat Trust is inviting skilled instrument reparists to design and deliver specialised training

programme on the repair and maintenance of Sikh musical instruments. The programme will

combine theoretical knowledge with hands‑on practice, equipping a cohort of enthusiastic

students with the skills needed to preserve these culturally important instruments for future

generations.


Supported by The Heritage Fund, this programme seeks to document and

promote the significance of Sikh cultural heritage, particularly its musical traditions.

Key Responsibilities & Deliverables

 

Curriculum Design

  • Create a structured syllabus that balances theory (instrument history,

acoustics, material science) with practical repair techniques for instruments

across wind, percussion and stringed.


Teaching & Demonstration

  •  Lead theory sessions, conduct live demonstrations, and supervise hands‑on

workshops where students diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair common issues.


Student Engagement

  • Employ interactive teaching methods (group projects, peer‑review, Q&A) to

keep learners actively involved and motivated.


Resource Guidance

  • Offer support on sourcing relevant authentic materials, tools, and replacement

parts specific to Sikh instrument repair.


Assessment & Reporting

  • Set clear evaluation criteria, track student progress, and produce a final report

summarising outcomes, achievements and recommendations for future

training.

Deliverables and Methodology

 Provide detailed workflow that covers on‑site instrument assessment, repair

procedures, and final delivery.


  • Working with our audio visual specialists to Produce high‑resolution repair‑process

videos and web‑ready versions, together with archival copies that meet Sangat Trust’s

technical specifications.


  • Create step‑by‑step written repair guides and instruction packs for each instrument

(tabla, harmonium, dilruba, taus, rabab).


  • Assemble and supply repair kits containing essential tools and replacement parts, each

kit accompanied by a concise usage guide.


  • Deliver a curated digital archive of all video, audio and metadata files, fully searchable

by instrument type, date and location.


  • Generate short marketing clips and social‑media graphics that showcase the repair

work and highlight its cultural significance.

Required Skills and Experience [Essential]

 

  • Strong track record of repairing Sikh instruments.


  • Strong cultural understanding in the importance of Kirtan and the music within the Sikh

community.


  • Experience of delivering training is highly desired.


  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills; ability to meet deadlines and adapt to

evolving project milestones.

Contract Details

 

  • Reporting line: Reports to the appointed Programme Lead and collaborates with the

Trust’s Communications team.


  • Start date ASAP, with development of the course and CPD materials until the end of

May.


  • Course delivery to be done between June and July, with a personal project for each

cohort member running until the end of November


  • Location: Based in the Midlands UK with flexibility for remote work where feasible.


  •  Evenings and Weekend work as and when required.


  • Part-time contract.


  • Up to £250.00 per day for up to 30 days.
