Community Historian: Training on Culturally Sensitive Sikh Oral‑History Collection

About the Role

Sangat Trust is inviting tenders from qualified trainers or training organisations to design and deliver a specialised programme that equips participants with the skills needed to collect Sikh oral histories in a culturally and linguistically sensitive manner. The training will form a lasting legacy of the Sikh Oral History and Music Repair Programme and will be delivered in‑person at Sangat Studios, Birmingham. 

Supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund, this programme seeks to document and

promote the significance of Sikh cultural heritage, particularly its.

Key Responsibilities & Deliverables

 

  • Training Delivery
    • Conduct a 2.5‑day, face‑to‑face workshop for up to 10 participants, marrying Sikh historical and cultural theory and practical interviewing techniques. 
  • Curriculum Development
    • Introduction to interviewing Punjabi Sikh elders.
    • Approaches to discussing Sikh music with elders.
    • Cultural, linguistic and faith‑based specificities.
  • Materials and Resources 
    • Produce a complete set of handouts, guides, and a course outline that meets the brief, and provide a list of further reading and external resources.
  • Assessment and Feedback
    • Evaluate participants’ understanding throughout the workshop, assess their interview plans for cultural sensitivity, and give constructive feedback.
  • Cultural Sensitivity
    • The trainer will demonstrate respectful interview etiquette, appropriate language use, and awareness of Sikh religious practices (e.g., handling of Gurbani related materials, observance of Satkar of Gurbani as well as respect for the Ustaad being interviewed).

Required Skills and Experience


  • Expertise in oral-history methodologies, preferably with experience interviewing Punjabi Sikh communities.
  • Experience with delivering workshops is highly desirable.
  • Strong understanding of Sikh cultural, linguistic, and faith‑based nuances.
  • Ability to design clear, engaging curricula and produce high‑quality training materials. 
  • Excellent communication skills in English; proficiency in Punjabi or Gurmukhi is an advantage.

Contract Details


  • Reporting line: Reports to the appointed Programme Lead and collaborates with the Trust’s Communications team.  
  • Start date ASAP for development of course and CPD materials until the end of May
  • The projected start date to deliver the training course is June, with completion by the end of July 2026.
  • Location: Based in the Midlands UK with flexibility for remote work where feasible.  
  • Evenings and Weekend work as and when required.
  • £200.00 a day for a forecasted 9 days between April and July.
